Care About Jewellery
Let’s face it: everybody’s jewellery needs a good clean occasionally. If you take a look at your own collection you’ll probably notice your precious jewellery getting tarnished or just plain grimy. So how do you go about cleaning your jewellery quickly, easily and safely?
Alankaar jewellery is special and conscious for your jewellery.
All jewellery needs some care and attention to be kept at its sparkling best. If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help with our quick to help you learn about how best to easily clean and care for your gold, sterling silver and gemstone jewellery.
Your jewellery should be stored in a dry place away from humidity, moisture, perfumes and extreme temperatures.
Rings and bracelets should be worn sparingly to avoid damage through impact. Avoid wearing rings when cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities.
Don´t forget to remove your rings when washing up or showering, as soap particles may become lodged in stone settings and crevices. Soaps can also leave a film over metal and stones, creating a dull appearance.
Store your jewellery in its own box or pouch to prevent scratching, chipping and entanglement. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch. Try to keep pieces apart, so that they don’t rub together or tangle up.
All Alankaar silver is hand polished before sale. Exposed to the atmosphere, all silver is prone to oxidization and consequent tarnishing. Gentle rubbing with a silver cleaning cloth will restore the original brilliance o f the surface.
If you wear your gold plated silver jewellery for significant periods of time, the plating will eventually wear down. To restore its appearance, you can have it re-plated.
Make sure your jewellery is not in regular contact with hard surfaces, which will scratch or wear down the plating or enameling.
Never use detergent, soap, toothpaste etc to clean your gold plated jewellery.
When dressing, jewellery should always be put on last as make up, cosmetics and perfumes can cause damage to delicate items.
All stone jewellery requires extra care and consideration during wearing to protect the setting as well as to safeguard the gemstone it holds.
Never clean your gold plated jewellery with bleach. Use jewellery cleaner and a soft cloth to clean your Gold plated jewellery. If you do not have jewellery cleaner, you can use tooth paste, mild soap and warm water.
Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold. Never go swimming in your jewellery, chlorine in swimming pools can cause damage.
Although gold-plated jewellery will not tarnish like silver, it will get dirty with wear and chemicals, lotions, perfumes and moist conditions will corrode it.
Never use ‘old wives’ jewellery cleaning methods involving toothpaste or baking soda which is rubbed onto the metal. This will remove tiny amounts of metal every time you do it and over time it will damage and deplete your precious jewellery.
Also take care when using a polishing cloth, brush or anything else which is rubbed against the metal, particularly if your jewellery has a more delicate finish (such as gilding, vermeil, plating or any patina or colouring).
Do not use a silver cloth or abrasive compounds i.e. baking soda to clean the Gold plated jewellery.
Too much enthusiasm with jewellery cleaning may not be a good thing!
Gold-plated jewellery can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a really soft toothbrush. Then rinse thoroughly & dry well.
Gold plating may in time slightly fade depending on wear and the amount of care taken.
To prolong the Gold or Rose gold plating, remove rings, bracelets, etc. when washing hands or using hand sanitizer.
Avoid your gold plated jewellery coming into contact with perfume or perfumed lotions. The perfume may react with the plating and cause it to wear off.
